How I Finally Found Balance Again
Hi! My name is Amara Ellis. I consider myself the typical young woman of today. My life is a mixture of work, friends, family, and my hobbies. Over the last few years I have noticed that how I am feeling about myself and my day-to-day challenges and successes has been changing, and I thought this is was just what “adulting” looked like - long days, little sleep, too much coffee, and an endless to-do list.
When Balance Slipped Away
When I recognized that something still seemed missing or incomplete, I focused on making specific changes to an aspect of my life – where, how, and when I worked out, what I ate and drank, having more routines and then less routines, what I was doing to relax, and even how I commuted to and from work. Some things made me feel better, but nothing ever stuck, and overall, I just felt “wrong.”
The weight changes, intermittent yeast infections, the mid-afternoon crashes, the unpredictable mood swings that came out of nowhere — I convinced myself it was just part of being a woman trying to keep it all together. Between work, family, and chasing big dreams, I thought fatigue was normal, that brain fog was just life, and that I’d eventually grow out of this cycle of feeling off. Each failed attempt chipped away at my confidence a little more and I couldn’t see that when it was happening. But deep down, I knew something wasn’t right.
The Wake-Up Call
I woke up one morning so uncomfortable that even my favorite leggings felt tight. My skin looked dull, my energy was gone, and I realized that my confidence had quietly disappeared. I wasn’t myself anymore — and I didn’t know why. I went through my morning routine, and as I was leaving for work, I set my coffee mug down on the table so I could grab my purse and keys, slip on my travel shoes, and turn the light off as I usually do and watched as the coffee teetered on the edge of the table and fell off. That moment broke me a little.
I looked at the five things I was trying to do at once and the spilled coffee and realized my life was this moment - trying to accomplish so many things at once that it all was making me unbalanced, just like the coffee cup. I remembered that from where I had been standing before I moved to get my shoes that the cup had looked fine. It wasn’t until I was staring at the mess on the floor that I look back realized that the cup had been further off of the edge of the table but I couldn’t see it from where I had been standing.
I also realized that I couldn’t see why I was feeling off as I was always focusing on the latest solution that promised a quick fix — the “clean eating” plans that cut out entire food groups, the detox teas that left me running to the bathroom, the latest supplements every influencer swore by, finding the right exercise routine and on and on. For a few days, I’d always feel like maybe — just maybe — I was onto something. I was focusing on the cup - the way I was feeling – from the wrong perspective.
Maybe it wasn’t what I was doing – I had definitely found things that had worked for me – but nothing had stuck. Maybe I needed to step back and look at the big picture and change my goal to making sure that everything was firmly on the table – that all of the solutions that I had chosen were fully balanced.
I was feeling unbalanced because I wasn’t looking at how things were connected to each other and how each of them impacted the other. That morning became my quiet breaking point — but also, looking back, my turning point.
She-Balanced
That night I spent a few hours writing out my new perspective on becoming balanced and as that became clearer I realized that I needed to make some revisions – not to what I was doing – but to the way that I was doing things and how I included new things in my life. I sought out products that helped me balance my activities with my new approach – achieving balance – balancing the good things that I enjoyed with the stuff that I had to do as I was “adulting” and finding ways to make those tasks more comfortable as I did them. And it worked.
I am now sharing the choices that I have made to change my life. People look at me now and say, “Wow – She Balanced!” I hope they make you feel more balanced in your life too!
